Water Works Will Never Demand Immediate Payment
(CINCINNATI, OH) - Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) is warning customers about a telephone scam that is targeting its customers. There are reports that customers are receiving calls demanding immediate payment of their water bill.
GCWW will only contact customers from the (513) 591-7700 number when discussing overdue bills and will always provide options for making payments.
GCWW never demands payment; instead, it will outline all options including the potential for providing financial assistance. Representatives will never take payments over the telephone and customers are always directed to an online portal or an automated telephone system to make payments.
If customers are not sure they are speaking with a GCWW employee, they should immediately hang up and dial (513) 591-7700 to contact the utility directly.
Other utilities across the nation also have experienced scam calls and texts. The scammers begin the call claiming they represent the utility, inform the customer their account is overdue, and allege the bill must be paid immediately or service will be disconnected. The scammer then asks for the customer’s credit card or debit card information.
Anyone receiving a suspicious or aggressive call should not give out personal information, including bank account or credit card numbers.
GCWW encourages customers to beware of high-pressure tactics, including threats of disconnection. Customers should never provide personal information to anyone over the telephone unless they are certain of the caller’s authenticity.
State and local police are aware of this scam, and you can help stop it by reporting suspicious activity promptly to the appropriate law enforcement agencies and providing any caller ID information that you may have. Customers can also report suspected fraud online at www.ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
