About Drinking Water Week
For several decades, AWWA and its members have celebrated Drinking Water Week, a unique opportunity for water professionals and the communities they serve to recognize the vital role water plays in daily life. The Drinking Water Week webpage offers free materials for download and additional information.
Greater Cincinnati Water Works joins communities across North America in celebrating Drinking Water Week, an annual observance led by the American Water Works Association. This year, Drinking Water Week will take place May 5-11. Its purpose is to highlight the importance of safe drinking water and recognize the tireless efforts of local water professionals who ensure its availability.
This year's celebration also coincides with a historic milestone—the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in the United States. This landmark law is designed to safeguard the public by setting high drinking water quality standards. The SDWA provides a scientific framework to identify potential risks to drinking water and address them in partnership with states and water utilities. Passed in 1974, the SDWA set strong water quality standards for the nation’s drinking water and established a regulatory framework to safeguard U.S. citizens' public health and safety. GCWW recognizes the act’s significant contributions to improving and protecting water quality and emphasizes the need for continued investment and scientific evaluation to address emerging challenges. Through collaborative efforts with government agencies, community partners, and dedicated volunteers, GCWW has played a crucial role in advancing the objectives of this landmark legislation.
“The people of the United States enjoy some of the world’s best drinking water, and the Safe Drinking Water Act helps make that possible,” said David LaFrance, CEO of the American Water Works Association. “Over the past 50 years, the SDWA has provided a consistent, scientific process for evaluating potential risks, inspired innovative solutions to water quality concerns, and provided consumers with confidence in the safety of our most vital resource. A safe and well-managed water supply is foundational to our health, well-being, and overall quality of life.”
To celebrate Drinking Water Week, water utilities, water organizations, government entities, environmental advocates, schools, and others throughout North America will help children and consumers of all ages understand how water is protected, cleaned, and delivered throughout their communities. Water utilities and others mark the occasion by hosting engaging events like educational fairs, contests, facility tours, interactive demonstrations, and more.
GCWW recognizes that all water professionals – from engineers designing infrastructure to operators monitoring treatment plants around the clock – play a critical role in ensuring safe and reliable drinking water to the Greater Cincinnati community. This Drinking Water Week, GCWW invites community participation and encourages everyone to:
- Recognize water professionals' role in ensuring safe water reaches every tap.
- Learn more about the local drinking water journey – where it comes from, how it’s delivered, and the work done to ensure drinking water quality.
- Advocate for and support initiatives that ensure adequate funding and resources for water infrastructure and professional development.
