CINCINNATI, OH — A man was injured Monday morning while working for a contractor at a construction site at Greater Cincinnati Water Works’ primary treatment plant. He is recovering at an area hospital.
The man suffered a fractured leg when a large metal attachment on a piece of equipment operated by contractors came loose and fell into an excavation pit at about 10:15 a.m. Monday. The incident occurred at the Richard Miller Treatment Plant in Cincinnati’s California neighborhood, near the Ohio River. The construction crew is building a nine-million-gallon clearwell at the facility.
A heavy rescue unit from the Cincinnati Fire Department responded to the scene and freed the worker, who was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment.
The injured man is a contractor for a company hired to help build the new clearwell, not a GCWW employee.
Personnel from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the incident.
GCWW began construction on a third clearwell at the treatment plant in summer 2023. The newest clearwell is needed to improve water quality and provide redundancy in our water system.
