Greater Cincinnati Water Works utility workers are on the roads working every day.
Protect our utility workers this month and every month... put your phone down, and don’t drive distracted!

DID YOU KNOW?
At least eight people a day are killed in distraction-related crashes.
Vehicle crashes are the number one cause of workplace death, and distracted driving has become a persistent danger on our roads. Distracted driving is a danger not just to you but also to everyone around you, including other drivers, pedestrians, road workers, and first responders.

What is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving is anything that takes attention away from driving, including manual, visual, and cognitive distractions, such as:

- removing your hands from the wheel
- moving your eyes away from the road
- taking your mind away from driving
Using a cell phone involves ALL these distractions at the same time.

What are the Laws?
Ohio Law, enacted on April 4, 2023, states that it is illegal to use or hold a cell phone or electronic device in your hand, lap, or other part of the body while driving on Ohio roads. If officers see a violation, they can (and will!) pull you over.

Drivers 18 and younger, are restricted from using their devices in any way, including hands-free features.
Drivers 18 years or older, are permitted to make or receive calls only with hands-free devices, such as:
- Speakerphones
- Earpiece
Wireless headset
- Electronic watch
- Connecting phone to vehicle

Drivers can listen to audio streaming apps and use navigational equipment if they turn them on before getting on the road or use a single touch or swipe to activate, modify, or deactivate them. In most cases, anything more than a single touch or swipe is against the law.

What are ways you can prevent distracted driving?
Plan Ahead Before Driving:
> Program GPS, read maps, and check traffic.
> Adjust vehicle controls (mirrors, seat, radio, temp).

While Driving, DO:
> Pull over to a safe area to make or receive phone calls or texts.
> Turn off your cell phone and/or put it in an unreachable spot.

While Driving, Do Not:
> Multi-task (no reading, writing notes, drinking, or intense conversations.)
> Reach down or behind the driver's seat.
> Pick up items from the floor, open the glove compartment, or clean the inside windows.
> Dial or answer a call or text.
