Billing Information

Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) supplies more than 43-billion gallons of water a year to over 1 million people. In addition to providing and billing for water, GCWW also provides billing services to other utilities. This results in fewer total bills for mutual customers and increased convenience. Depending on your geographic area, your GCWW bill may include charges for sewer, stormwater, waste collection or other municipality specific fees/services.

Understanding Your Bill

At Greater Cincinnati Water Works, we remain committed to providing customers within our regional communities with a plentiful supply of the highest-quality water and excellent services. One step towards accomplishing this goal is the design and layout of your billing statement, which includes easy-to-read customer alerts and user-friendly information:

Water charges include two parts: charges for water used (usage) and charges for service availability (base charge). The base charge is a fixed amount for being connected to the public water system. This fixed amount includes but is not limited to, operations and maintenance costs for processing, treatment, storage, and delivery of water, emergency service, customer care assistance, and billing services. Usage charges are based on the volume of water used.

The amount a customer is billed is determined through established rates.

Where applicable, your GCWW bill may also include "Other Charges" such as sewer, stormwater management, waste collection, or other additional fees.

Sewer Usage and Winter Period Average
(also known as History Based Consumption or HBC)

In both Cincinnati and Mason, OH, GCWW acts as a billing agent for the local sewer utility (Metropolitan Sewer District of Cincinnati and the City of Mason Public Utilities Department, respectively). Sewer service includes the removal and clean-up of wastewater leaving homes and businesses in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Anything that goes down the drain (shower, toilet, faucet, etc) is considered wastewater and must be collected and treated before the reclaimed water may re-enter our region’s waterways. This service is provided by the local sewer utility. As an industry-standard practice, sewer usage is calculated and billed based upon water usage.

In the summer months, however, customers may use water for outside uses that do not go down the drain. If a property is a one or two family, residential property, the sewer usage is "capped" based upon the property’s winter average water usage or a default value if no history exists. This maximum or “cap” applies to all non-winter billing months. The “cap” is automatic for all single or two family, residential properties.

  • Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC), serving the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, uses the January, February, and March billing cycles to set the maximum or "cap" on the property’s sewer usage for the rest of the year.  To learn more about the MSD winter period average, please visit https://msdgc.org/customers/residential-customers/your-sewer-bill/

  • The City of Mason Public Utilities Department (Mason, OH) uses the property’s average monthly consumption from December through April to calculate the maximum or “cap” on sewer usage for the rest of the year.
