Pilot Project to Test Plastic Curb Extensions

Dec 21, 2021

New plastic curb extensions were just installed at the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Pullan Avenue in Northside. The curb extensions prevent motorists from passing in the parking lane, and force traffic into one travel lane, slowing speeds into the pedestrian-friendly neighborhood business district.

Curb extensions are typically constructed of concrete, and can be costly due to the need to reconstruct the adjacent sidewalk and construct new drainage devices. Concrete curb extensions cost approximately $80,000 a set, compared to $6,600 for a set of plastic curb extensions.

The new plastic curb extensions here are a pilot project to test the durability and longevity of the plastic material. If the pilot is successful, the plastic curb extensions could be installed in additional business districts throughout the city.
