Speed Limit Reduction
The Ohio Revised Code establishes statutory speed limits, and the Department of Transportation and Engineering (DOTE) does not have the ability to lower speed limits without approval from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Typically this process involves conducting a speed study, which considers the development of the area, roadway features including traffic volume, accidents, the presence of vulnerable users, and the speed vehicles are currently traveling. Once a speed study is performed, the results and recommendation are conveyed to ODOT with a petition to modify the posted speed limit.
DOTE will work with community councils to prioritize streets for speed studies and request approval from ODOT to reduce the posted speed limit. The program will target improvements around schools, recreation areas, and neighborhood business districts.
