Youth Services

Youth Services Unit

The School Resource Officers (SRO) Program began in Cincinnati in 1967.  We have the 3rd oldest SRO program in the country. Our mission is to improve youth attitude toward police and provide a safe environment conducive to learning. We operate under the Triad Concept:  Police Officer – Mentor - Teacher. We provide a safe learning environment for teachers and students. We are first and foremost police officers, however we enforce laws on school grounds.

School Resource Officers do not work for the schools; however, we work in partnership with the schools to achieve common goals such as safety and education.

Summer Cadet Program

The Cincinnati Police Summer Cadet Program gives students ages 16 through 18 the opportunity to work part time, during the summer, for the Cincinnati Police Department.  The Cadet Program represents a major initiative to provide students with the chance to learn about police work. Along with this, the Cadet Program gives students the opportunity to stand up against crime in their city, which helps to provide a sense of pride in their neighborhood.  The program will provide resources and opportunities to qualified persons interested in choosing police work as a career.

Public Safety Cadet Program

This program gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement by working and training with members of the Cincinnati Police Department.

The Public Safety Cadet program is a career development program, which emphasizes academic study, character development, and self-discipline.  Public Safety Cadets assist police and city personnel at functions where they may be called upon for a wide variety of tasks and services.

This program can further each Cadet's education, encourage the Cadet's participation in a rewarding and productive service environment, and enhance the Cadet's preparation for future roles as a citizen and community members. Besides gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give back to their community.

Being a Public Safety Cadet offers many opportunities to learn valuable leadership and life skills, make new friends, interact with the public, and most of all, have fun!  The program is available to qualified young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20.

The ALICE program was authored by a seasoned law enforcement officer to keep his wife, an elementary school principal, safe after the tragic event at Columbine. Since these humble beginnings, ALICE continues to be the leading active shooter response program in the country due in large part to the law enforcement community.
