CINCINNATI -- City leaders joined police officers and members of the Kim family today to rename East Hyde Park Commons in honor of fallen Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim.
The park is located at 3357 Erie Avenue across from the intersection of Marburg and Erie Avenues, which is immediately adjacent to Cincinnati Police Department’s (CPD) District Two headquarters where Officer Kim was assigned. Councilmember Amy Murray, with the unanimous support from the Mayor and Council, worked with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) to rename the park.
“After talking to CPD and District Two staff, we felt this was the best way to create a lasting memory in honor of Sonny Kim and his family,” Murray said. “It seems so insignificant in light of the sacrifice that Sonny gave for his fellow citizens. Ultimately, we hope that every time we drive by this park or spend time there, we will be reminded to look for an opportunity to say THANK YOU to our first responders who serve.”
Police Chief Eliot Isaac agreed, “We are grateful for the dedication of this park in Officer Sonny Kim’s honor. Sonny’s presence in District Two will always be remembered and his memory will be preserved for all who come to enjoy this public space.”
CRC Director Daniel Betts commented: “The Cincinnati Recreation Commission is honored to rename East Hyde Park Commons after Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim. Officer Kim’s legacy is that of a wonderful role model for our youth and as being instrumental in shaping the community where he lived and worked. He will always be remembered.”
Officer Kim Kim was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call for service on Tuesday, June 19, 2015.
