CPD announces Safe Gun Storage Week

May 31, 2024

Ready to make lasting change in your community? Mark your calendars for the Cincinnati Police Department's inaugural Safe Gun Storage Week from June 9 to June 15. Click below to take the pledge:

Safe Gun Storage Week is a new initiative from the Cincinnati Police Department and its partners to ensure gun owners in Cincinnati have the tools, resources, and information they need to keep themselves, their loved ones, and their communities safe.

If you own a firearm, we invite you to join us in this crucial initiative by pledging to secure your firearms responsibly. By taking the pledge, you demonstrate your commitment to the safety and well-being of our community. If you do not own a gun, we still invite you to join us in raising awareness of the importance of safe and secured gun storage. By taking the pledge, you'll receive an email each day of Safe Gun Storage Week (June 9 to June 15, 2024) with tips, information, and resources on securing firearms.

Owning a firearm comes with immense responsibility, and we can all do our part to ensure firearms don't get into the wrong hands. Check if you're storing your gun properly and use your platform to ensure others do the same!

  • Parents who own firearms should utilize gun locks to properly secure them. Please follow the instructions in the manufacturer's manual provided with the lock.

  • Hiding a gun in a closet, drawer, or similar location is not safe storage.  Unloaded firearms should be stored in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault, or storage case. The storage location should be inaccessible to children.

  • Avoid leaving firearms unattended in vehicles. Secure guns in car lock boxes if necessary.

Are you or a loved one in need of a gun lock? You can pick up a gun lock at any of the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library branches. Find your nearest branch here.

Are you a business, community organization, or social group? The Cincinnati Police Department Neighborhood Liaison Units are available to host seminars on safe storage and locking demonstrations. Click here for a full list of contact details for District NLUs.
