Food Waste
In 2021, Cincinnati sent approximately 74,953 tons to the landfill, 31.1% (23,310 tons) of which was organic material
- 16.8% =12,592 tons of food waste
- 14.3% =10,718 tons of yard trimmings
All of this organic waste contributes to methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which is harmful to the environment and drives climate change. Cincinnati needs to reduce the amount of organics residents and businesses are sending to the landfill.
Prevention
Food waste prevention and food waste rescue are two essential pillars when it comes to tackling food waste. Everything from savoring leftovers to donating to food rescue organizations can help divert food waste from the landfill.
Rescue
Food waste rescue is a great way to both prevent food waste from going to the landfill, while also contributing to increased food access for individuals and families who are food insecure.
Composting
Composting is an environmentally friendly way to take organic waste like food scraps and yard waste and turn it into nutrient-rich food for the soil. From backyard bins to special event compost collection, Cincinnati has many great options for keeping organics out of the landfill.
