CINCINNATI, Ohio –  The Cincinnati Health Department will hold a “Local Conversations” event to seek input from the Cincinnati residents regarding their concerns, and to identify strategic priorities regarding health disparities and equity efforts where they live, work and play. It will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at Community Action Agency in Bond Hill, 1740 Langdon Farm Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45237. Members of the community are invited and encouraged to participate.

“This is part of the effort of the Cincinnati Health Department, in partnership with the Ohio Commission on Minority Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to review and update the previous efforts that identified community priorities to address health disparities and equity,” said Maryse Amin, Ph.D., MS, Assistant Health Commissioner with the Cincinnati Health Department. “In 2016, we developed a plan to address health disparities. Now we want to update, modify, or revise that plan as needed based on the input from the community.”

In 2008, the Ohio Commission on Minority Health launched the “Local Conversations” Initiative, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health: “National regional conversations based on the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities were initiated to bring together local state, tribal and federal experts, and practitioners from the private and public sectors to lay the foundation for a comprehensive community-driven, sustained strategy.”

Goals of this initiative are to categorize the compelling issues that impact health outcomes, identify action steps that can be adopted by and adapted to specific target audiences, highlight practices that help eliminate health disparities, and promote tools, programs and information sources for consumers, caregivers, and health providers.

The National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities’ strategic actions areas include increasing awareness of health disparities, strengthen leadership at all levels, enhance patient-provider communication, improve cultural and linguistic competency in delivering health services, and coordinate and utilize data, research, and outcome evaluations more effectively.
