Preparing to be a Firefighter

"What can I do to prepare for a career in the fire service?"

If you want to become a firefighter, there are many ways to become acquainted with the fire service. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

Stay in high school! If college is in your future, we encourage you to continue your post-high school education. Graduate! While a degree in Fire Science and/or Emergency Medical Services is good, it is not necessary. Advancement opportunities are plentiful in the fire service, and a college degree may help.

Cadet programs and Fire Explorer posts are good ways to become familiar with a career in firefighting.

Are you interested in the military? Many firefighters come from military backgrounds. You can even be a Firefighter or EMT in the military. A military service background often helps when looking to advance in the fire service. Special credit is given to applicants who successfully complete all portions of the testing process and provide satisfactory documentation confirming honorable discharge.

Becoming an Emergency Medical Technician is a challenging career opportunity for those 18 and older. Many become EMTs to work through college or get experience on their way to becoming career firefighters. While an EMT certification is not a prerequisite to apply for the Cincinnati Fire Department, many departments nationwide require it. Check your local higher education facilities or nearby universities for EMT class opportunities.

Do your homework. Go to the library or bookstore and find books on firefighting. Get a feel for what the job requires. Surf the web. Thousands of websites exist with a wealth of helpful information. Firefighting is an excellent career with endless possibilities. If you're far enough along that you are studying for the written exam portion of the hiring process, check out this resource and search out other likeable guides online.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including physical fitness. Firefighting is a physically demanding occupation. Firefighters carry 80-100 lbs. of equipment, often while navigating stairs, confined spaces, and climbing ladders. You must stay in excellent physical condition from the moment you apply. To get an idea of what is expected, check out this video showcasing the physical ability test that all applicants must complete.
