Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I am already certified as a firefighter. Do I have to complete Recruit School for the Cincinnati Fire Department?
A: Yes. All fire recruits go through 20-24 weeks of fire training. Those already certified as firefighters do not need to sit for the state certification exam but will complete all other competencies with their peers. Those with an EMT certification will not be required to sit through the EMT class that follows Recruit School.
Q: Do I need previous knowledge of firefighting, experience in the field, or certifications?
A: No. Previous knowledge is helpful as it will make you more comfortable with the material. However, you will learn everything you need to be a successful firefighter from the training staff at the CFD. They aim to ensure that you can learn about the fire service in a controlled, monitored environment.
Q: What is the youngest age at which you hire? The oldest?
A: You can apply to work for the Cincinnati Fire Department at the age of 17; you must be 18 by the date of appointment. When we say "date of appointment", we are referring to your first day on the job as a new recruit at Recruit School. The oldest you can be on your first day of Recruit School is 40. You cannot turn 41 before your date of appointment. Read more about CFD hiring requirements here.
*NOTE*: If you are between 14 and 18, please consider learning more about our CFD Cadet Program.
Q: Do you have any Volunteer or Part-time positions available?
A: The Cincinnati Fire Department is a full-time, career department, so only those pursuing full-time, career work should apply.
Q: Are there only firefighting jobs available? What other positions does the CFD hire for?
A: Visit the City of Cincinnati Government Jobs website to learn more about non-sworn positions with the Department (e.g., dispatch, support roles, etc.) and view other open positions throughout the City. You can also fill out a City Job Interest Card to be notified as new positions become available.
Q: When does the next Recruit Class start? How often do you open applications?
A: This question does not have a straightforward answer. Generally, an application window opens every two years. The hiring process can span six to eight months (or more!) to generate the list of applicants who will be considered for hire. Because of this, the length of time between applicant callbacks is unpredictable and can span a long period of time. While we aim to offer at least one recruit class per year, the needs of the Department and the City dictate how often we need to bring on new members.
Q: I am on already on the Eligibility List. When will I hear back?
A: The best way to know how a list is progressing is to contact our Recruitment Team at Fire.Recruiting@cincinnati-oh.gov. You can also see what's going on with current hiring windows by following the Cincinnati Fire Department on Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn.
Q: What are the recruit school hours?
A: Monday through Friday, 0800 to 1700 are normal hours. Some adjustments are made for holiday weeks and special training opportunities. You will be paid while in recruit school and unable to hold other employment while in Recruit School.
