The Operations Division is responsible for the daily activities of all fire companies, including the response to all fire and emergency medical emergencies, the fire prevention activities of operations personnel, and the special operations response to technical rescue and explosive ordnance incidents.

The Operations Division is the largest division of the Fire Department, comprised of 786 uniformed employees and one civilian Administrative Technician.  The Operations Division ensures that the following positions are staffed every day: 4 District Fire Chiefs, 26 Engine Companies, 12 Ladder Companies, 2 Heavy Rescue Companies, 12 medic transport units, 3 Advanced Life Support (ALS) Supervisors, 1 Safety Captain, 1 Bomb Unit (Engine 14), 3 Foam Units, 1 fire boat, and 3 Zodiac inflatable boats. All engine, truck, and heavy rescue companies are staffed with a minimum of four personnel at all times. These assets are strategically located throughout the City in 26 separate fire houses.

The Operations Division is under the command of Assistant Fire Chief Breitfelder.
