AST/UST Permit Requests
The Cincinnati Fire Department regulates aboveground storage tanks and is the delegated authority for underground storage tanks in Cincinnati. Aboveground storage tanks are regulated following the current, most up-to-date edition of the International Fire Code, Ohio Fire Code, Cincinnati Fire Prevention Code, applicable approved standards, and recognized testing laboratories. Underground storage tanks are regulated per the current, most up-to-date edition of the International Fire Code, Ohio Fire Code, Ohio Administrative Code 1301:7-9 Underground Storage Tanks BUSTR Rules, Cincinnati Fire Prevention Code, applicable approved standards, and recognized testing laboratories.
Permits are required for installation, removal, closure-in-place, removal from service more than ninety days, performance of a change in service, change of product, major repair that has caused a release, or performance of a modification of system or component. Permit applications must be submitted before any work is conducted, completed, or performed.
Permits may be revoked if conditions of a permit have been violated, false statements or misrepresentation of material fact on the application or supporting documentation was made, the permit was issued in error, applicable provisions or codes are violated, or an action (or nature thereof) creates a hazard to life and or property. An additional permit is also required for the storage and dispensing of chemicals. The cost of your permit is subject to the current City of Cincinnati Fire and EMS Fee Schedule.
Prepare these documents for your permit application:
- A thorough description or scope of work and activities performed on the UST/AST system(s)
- Specification sheets and technical details of all components considered for installation and MSD Data sheets for the proposed chemical involved
- A scaled site plan noting the dimensions of the AST/UST system and the location of structures, property, streets, waterways, and major utilities within 50 feet of the site
- AST/USTs, product lines, and dispenser islands and vent lines should be clearly shown on the submitted plan
- A thorough description, including brand names, of all AST/UST, piping, containment, and ancillary components for the AST/UST system(s)
- Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listings, or equivalent, demonstrating compatibility with biofuel (ethanol greater than 10% or biodiesel greater than 20%) or with any hazardous substance, if present
