Fire Prevention Week 2023

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safer when cooking. Cooking was the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries in 2015-2019 and the second leading cause of home fire deaths. Cooking caused 49 percent of reported home fires, 20 percent of reported home fire deaths, and 42 percent of home fire injuries. In 2019, Thanksgiving was the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. Some important cooking safety tips are listed below.

Always keep a close eye on what you’re cooking. For foods with longer cooking times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully. Clear the cooking area of combustible items and keep anything that can burn, such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Create a “kid and pet free zone” of at least three feet (one meter) around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Your Cincinnati Fire Department will be hosting an event about cooking safety with entertaining activities! We have partnered with the American Red Cross Association and UC Burn for this event. Cincinnati's own Gary the Lion (FC Cincinnati) and UC Bearcat (University of Cincinnati) will also be joining in on the fun! Not to mention food trucks from LaRosa's Pizza, Kabobske Mediterranean Food, Kona Ice, and Quite Frankly will be selling their delicious food.

In addition, NFPA data shows that cooking is the only major cause of fire that resulted in more fires and fire deaths in 2014-2018 than in 1980-1984.
