Western Hills Viaduct: Lane Closure on Tuesday for Inspection on Bottom Deck

Oct 23, 2023

CINCINNATI – The northernmost lane heading west along the bottom deck of the Western Hills Viaduct will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 24, so crews from the City of Cincinnati can closely inspect a second trouble spot about 200 feet to the east of the repair completed today, Monday, Oct. 23.

Please see the image below for the locations of the two sites.

Additional concrete fell into the far westbound lane along the bottom deck Monday morning. Crews on site finishing the repair to an expansion joint on the top deck noticed the issue. The two trouble spots don’t appear to be related.

“This second site is under review,” said Bill Shefcik, principal engineer for the city’s Department of Transportation & Engineering bridge program and project manager for the Western Hills Viaduct Replacement.  “We think the colder temperatures overnight Sunday to Monday may have contributed to the issue at this other location. We will be able to share more after we’ve gotten a close look.”

No injuries or property damage were reported.

An update from the city will be forthcoming.
