Repairs, Rehab Starting on 185 Streets in 25 Neighborhoods Throughout the City

Apr 19, 2018

CINCINNATI – Repairs and rehabilitation on 185 streets in 25 neighborhoods across Cincinnati has begun as part of the Department of Transportation & Engineering’s annual improvement program for 2018.

Crews are working this week in East Price Hill, West Price Hill, Roselawn, Mt. Washington and Mt. Lookout.

Road Rehab Work

In addition to rehab, crews will repair and apply surface treatments for preventive maintenance on another 216 streets in 22 Cincinnati neighborhoods starting later this spring.

The combined value of the rehab and preventive maintenance totals $28.2 million, including $11.4 million in funding from the City’s Capital Acceleration Plan (CAP).

This marks the third year DOTE will receive a significant funding boost in funding for street rehab from CAP, the City’s six-year financing initiative that  nearly doubles the amount dedicated to street rehabilitation and maintenance between 2016 and 2021.

“The street rehabilitation program continues to contribute positively to the quality of life for our residents,” said Harry Black, City Manager. “And because of the additional funding from CAP, the City has been able to maintain the overall ‘good’ condition of our street network.”

Rehab and preventive maintenance treatments on roads save money in the long run by increasing their useful service life. The cost to replace poor roads is significantly more over time than maintaining them in good condition.

Combined with the annual street-improvement program, outside grants and CAP, the City will invest approximately $171 million to rehabilitate or resurface nearly 40 percent of its 2,936 total lane miles in all 52 neighborhoods by June 30, 2021.

In 2018, DOTE plans to repair and repave 101 lane miles, as well as perform preventive maintenance by resurfacing another 90 lane miles. A lane mile is a common unit of area measurement for street maintenance and rehabilitation. It factors in the amount of pavement and aggregate used to repair or repave. The City defines it as an area 10 feet wide by 1 mile in length.

In addition to East Price Hill, West Price Hill, Roselawn, Mt. Washington and Mt. Lookout, streets in the following neighborhoods will undergo rehabilitation this year:

  • Avondale
  • Bond Hill
  • California
  • Clifton
  • Columbia Tusculum
  • Corryville
  • CUF (Clifton Heights, University Heights and Fairview)
  • Lower Price Hill
  • Evanston
  • Heights
  • Hyde Park
  • Linwood
  • Madisonville
  • Mt. Auburn
  • Over-the-Rhine
  • Spring Grove Village
  • Walnut Hills
  • West End
  • Westwood
  • Winton Hills

Crews generally work 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday but are allowed to work on Saturdays and later into the evening, as needed.

The work may require parking or driving restrictions. Residents will be notified at least 24 hours in advance. All roads will be reopened to through traffic during non-work hours.
