Millennium Hotel Demo Underway

Mar 25, 2021

CINCINNATI – Elm Street is closed between Fifth and Sixth streets through June 2022 for demolition of the former Millennium Hotel complex.

Crews, which started March 29, 2021, are using cranes and other heavy equipment to remove a 34-story tower and five-story annex building to the north along Sixth and a 24-story tower to the south along Fifth, as well as a skywalk over Sixth and a skywalk that connects to the Duke Energy Convention Center over Elm.

To maintain safety and accommodate crews and equipment in this compact area of downtown, Elm Street will remain closed throughout the project. It is expected to wrap up during the summer of 2022.

Motorists traveling north on Elm are being detoured west at Fourth and east at Fifth. The sidewalks adjacent to the demolition site on the south side of Sixth and the north side of Fifth also will remain closed.

Detour signs are in place to help guide motorists and pedestrians around the site.

The main entrance to the convention center at Fifth and Elm remains open to the public for the duration of the project. Access on the north side of the building on Sixth also remains open. The sidewalk along the east side of the convention center facing Elm is open for the time being but will close as needed to maintain public safety as demolition progresses.

In addition, there will be full closures of Sixth Street and periodic lane closures on Fifth and Sixth as demolition progresses. The City’s Department of Transportation & Engineering will share updates in advance of new closures by email and on Twitter via @RoadmapCincy.

The demolition contractor, Cincinnati-based O’Rourke Wrecking Co., began interior remediation and abatement in late February. Demolition of the skywalk over Elm was completed the week of April 5, 2021 with demolition of the shorter podium buildings underway in spring. Demolition of the towers is expected to begin by late spring or early summer.
