May 14, 2024

CINCINNATI – The bottom deck of the Western Hills Viaduct will be closed Saturday, May 18, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for routine inspection and scheduled maintenance.

Through traffic heading east and west on the viaduct will be allowed via the top deck.

In addition, there are two associated closures:

  • The ramp at exit 2B from southbound Interstate 75 to the viaduct will close to accommodate equipment and crews. Motorists may use the Western Avenue exit off I-75 south to detour.
  • The stretch of Spring Grove Avenue between Harrison and Marshall avenues also will be closed to through traffic until approximately 3:30 p.m. Motorists heading south on Spring Grove will be detoured via Marshall to Central Parkway. Motorists heading north will be detoured at Harrison to Brighton Place.

Detour signage also will be posted on site to help guide motorists. Motorists are encouraged to use caution when approaching the area.

City crews will perform routine maintenance, which includes sweeping, concrete sounding checks and chipping off loose concrete. In addition, city bridge engineers and a consultant will conduct inspections during the closure.

About the Western Hills Viaduct
The viaduct is a double-decker bridge built in the early 1930s. It spans more than a half mile over a large, active rail yard and the Mill Creek Valley, connecting Westwood, Harrison and Queen City avenues to Spring Grove Avenue, McMillan Avenue, Central Parkway and I-75. The city closes portions of the viaduct to perform routine maintenance and inspections at least twice a year. In addition, the Ohio Department of Transportation performs maintenance on the I-75 ramps that connect to the viaduct.
