Thornton Avenue Improvement Project
A $1.3 million safety and mobility improvement project at the intersection of Thornton Avenue and River Road/U.S. 50 in Sayler Park has been completed.
The following improvements were made:
- Install traffic signals to create a safer four-way intersection with River Road/U.S. 50
- Install a new crosswalk on River Road/U.S. 50 that includes curb ramps
- Construct a dedicated path for pedestrians and bicyclists along Thornton Avenue, crossing over railroad tracks and leading to Fernbank Park to the east and Forbes Road to the south
- Replace railroad crossing gates
A new sidewalk adjacent to Thornton Avenue on the north side of River Road was installed in 2020 as part of the project.
The project, which is funded by state and federal grants, was completed in 2024.
