Harrison Avenue Safety Improvements
For updated information about this project, please visit: https://publicinput.com/HarrisonAve.
Harrison Avenue has been identified as a corridor with a high number of vehicular and pedestrian crashes. The goal of this project is to reduce speeding, reduce the number and severity of crashes, and improve safety for pedestrians. The project is located along the three-mile section of Harrison Avenue between Queen City Avenue and Kling Avenue in the neighborhoods of Westwood and South Fairmount. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring of 2025.
The project will update the street's lane striping design to include: one travel lane in each direction, a center turn lane, and parking on one side of the street. This lane striping design has successfully reduced speeding in other neighborhoods and will address many of the crashes throughout the Harrison Avenue corridor. Additionally, features such as curb extensions, new pedestrian crossings, speed cushions, and median islands will be constructed to improve pedestrian safety and calm traffic. Bicycle lanes may be feasible in some areas as well.
DOTE attended community meetings and collected public input during April and May of 2023; staff has used this input to determine where on-street parking and pedestrian safety improvements will be prioritized.
DOTE is working with SORTA to ensure that the public transit experience is enhanced with the updates to the roadway corridor.
The Department of Transportation and Engineering (DOTE) worked with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to conduct a safety study and develop recommendations to improve safety along this portion of Harrison Avenue. Grant funding for construction of these recommendations has been secured from ODOT.
