Stay-At-Home Order Issued For State of Ohio
Mar 22, 2020
CINCINNATI – Gov. Mike DeWine has issued a stay-at-home order for the state of Ohio to prevent further spread of COVID-19.
This order prohibits holding gatherings of any size and closes all nonessential businesses. It does not prohibit essential activities like going to the grocery store, receiving medical care, or taking a walk at the park. Residents can also return home from out of state and can leave the state.
Essential businesses – grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, etc. – may remain open but must comply with social distancing requirements.

The order goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 23. It will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 6.
“We will get through this. The City of Cincinnati will continue to provide essential services, but Cincinnatians should commit to only travel from their home if it is essential,” said Mayor John Cranley. “Reducing the opportunity for community spread is our number one priority.”Additional information about the order and what it means for residents is available on the Stay-At-Home Order Frequently Asked Questions website.
“We urge our residents not to panic, however, please take this order seriously, as COVID-19 is a real threat to our community," stated Dr. Melba R. Moore, Cincinnati Health Commissioner. "Please adhere to the social distancing of six feet from another person as well as continue to maintain proper hygiene practices.”
Dr. Moore stressed that social distancing is scientifically proven to be one of the most effective methods to slow the transmission of communicable disease, such as COVID-19. She encourages everyone to:
- Keep a distance of at least six feet away from another person
- Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- Refrain from touching your face
- Use hand sanitizer
- Covering coughs or sneezes (into the sleeve or elbow, not hands)
- Regularly cleaning high-touch surfaces, and not shaking hands.
