About Domestic Partner Registries
The first city to offer domestic partnerships in Ohio was Cleveland Heights in 2003. This was accomplished through voter referendum. This smaller City took the lead and other Ohio cities have come on board. In 2007, Toledo became Ohio’s second city to offer domestic partnerships. Cleveland City Council followed suit in 2008 when it voted to enact a domestic partner registry. Ohio cities have continued to create domestic partner registries. In 2011, the Athens, OH City Council established a domestic partner registry, Dayton’s City Commission and Columbus’s City Council approved ordinances creating domestic partnership registries in 2012.
