Elm Street Closing Between 5th to 6th through June 2022

Sixth Street will be closed to all traffic between Race and Elm streets beginning at 7:00 a.m. this Wednesday, April 14, through 5:00 p.m. next Tuesday, April 20, so crews can remove the skywalk that connects the former hotel to an annex building across the street.

Motorists heading west on Sixth will be detoured south at Race Street and west again at Fourth. Detour signs will be posted on site.

CINCINNATI – Elm Street will be closing between Fifth and Sixth streets for more than a year beginning Monday, March 29, as crews start demolition of the former Millennium Hotel complex.

Crews will be using cranes and other heavy equipment to remove a 34-story tower and five-story annex building to the north along Sixth and a 24-story tower to the south along Fifth, as well as a skywalk over Sixth and a skywalk that connects to the Duke Energy Convention Center over Elm.

To maintain safety and accommodate crews and equipment in this compact area of downtown, Elm Street will remain closed throughout the project. It is expected to wrap up during the summer of 2022.

Motorists traveling north on Elm will be detoured west at Fourth and east at Fifth. The sidewalks closest to the demolition site on the south side of Sixth and the north side of Fifth also will remain closed.

Detour signs will be in place to help guide motorists and pedestrians around the site.

The main entrance to the convention center at Fifth and Elm will remain open to the public for the duration of the project. Access on the north side of the building on Sixth also will remain open. The sidewalk along the east side of the convention center facing Elm is open for the time being but will close as needed to maintain public safety as demolition progresses

In addition, there will be full closures of Sixth Street and periodic lane closures on Fifth and Sixth as demolition progresses. The City’s Department of Transportation & Engineering will share updates in advance of new closures by email and on Twitter via @RoadmapCincy.

The demolition contractor, Cincinnati-based O’Rourke Wrecking Co., began interior remediation and abatement in late February. Demolition of the skywalk over Elm is expected to take place in the coming week followed by demolition of the shorter podium buildings this spring. Demolition of the towers is expected to begin by late spring or early summer.
