City’s Annual Giving Tree to Benefit Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank
Needed donations include diapers and feminine hygiene products
CINCINNATI – First Lady Dena Cranley has unveiled the City of Cincinnati's annual giving tree and announced donations will benefit the Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank. Each year the City’s giving tree has been generously donated by the Bob Castellini family.
Through January 2, those wishing to participate may select an ornament off the giving tree located in the City Hall lobby to donate diapers and tampon products. Diaper sizes 4, 5, and 6 are most in need.
“Children in low-income families are at a greater risk of suffering the effects of diaper needs because families cannot afford to buy them,” said First Lady Cranley. “As you fill your shopping carts with holiday gifts for family and friends, we are asking you to add a couple more items, diapers and tampons.”
Sweet Cheeks partners with local social service agencies to provide diapers to families in need while raising awareness of the basic health need for diapers.
“Diapers aren’t covered by food stamps or WIC,” said Megan Fischer, Sweet Cheeks CEO and Founder. “One in three families can’t afford the diapers they need for their babies. After learning this I opened Sweet Cheeks and we now distribute over 75,000 diapers a month to 32 partner agencies.”
In the Greater Cincinnati area there are more than 16,000 diaper-wearing children experiencing diaper need each month. At an average rate of six diapers per day per child (and more than double that for newborns), diaper-wearing children in poverty in the United States require more than 5.8 billion diapers annually to keep them clean, dry and healthy.
Sweet Cheeks, the only diaper bank in Greater Cincinnati recently launched the Cincinnati Alliance for Period Supplies and will begin distributing period supply kits this month. One in four women cannot afford the period supplies they need to safely manage their menstrual health.
