1/10/25 Winter Operations Update

Jan 10, 2025

The City of Cincinnati continues to recover from a historic snowstorm while working through challenging winter conditions, with additional snowfall expected today and into the start of the weekend. City crews are in their sixth consecutive day of working 12-hour shifts to ensure safe conditions for residents.

Today’s Focus

  • Preparing for additional snow accumulation today and into Saturday
  • Using all equipment Citywide from departments including Recreation, Parks, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, and Metropolitan Sewer District to assist in snow removal
  • Systematically addressing streets in all four plow districts, ensuring all routes are plowed
  • Focusing on plow maintenance and repair, as equipment has been in use continuously since the snowstorm began

Additional Snow Forecast

Additional snow is forecast for Friday afternoon, continuing into midday Saturday, with total accumulation of three to five inches expected.

Drivers should use extreme caution, plan extra time, and give snowplows and other vehicles plenty of room on roadways.

As the work week concludes, residents are urged to stay home and avoid using the roads unless absolutely necessary. Additionally, residents with off-street parking are encouraged to move their cars off City streets to assist with snow removal.

Comprehensive Snow Operations

The City has been operating out of the Emergency Operations Center since Sunday afternoon, coordinating with federal, state, county, and local officials in response efforts.

The Department of Public Services (DPS) continues to focus on residential routes, but the extreme cold temperatures make it difficult to clear snow, and streets require multiple passes. Crews are using all available resources, including calcium chloride and rock salt, to clear the City’s 3,100 lane miles.

As of 7 a.m. Friday, plows have traveled more than 47,000 lane miles to clear and re-clear City streets. That is the equivalent of driving every lane mile in the City 15 times, and nearly as much as driving the circumference of the Earth twice.

Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) Rec Centers

The City has served hundreds of community members at the daytime cold weather shelter at the Over-the-Rhine Recreation Center (1715 Republic St). The daytime shelter will continue to operate until Saturday at 6:45 p.m.

The activation includes:

  • Expanded hours from 6:15 a.m. – 6:45 p.m.
  • Metro bus transportation to/from the overnight Winter Shelter at 411 Gest Street
  • Hot coffee, lunch, and dinner
  • Behavioral health services if needed
  • Non-emergent health services if needed
  • Blankets, hats, and scarves
  • Pet services for people experiencing homelessness with their pets

All other CRC rec centers are open as warming shelters during normal operating hours.

CRC thanks LaRosa’s and the Cincinnati Reds Community Foundation for providing food to the daytime shelter on Saturday.

311 Community Responder Team

Four teams of community responders have been deployed throughout the City, helping with traffic control, assisting broken down motorists, and checking on 311 service requests to ensure they are properly routed to departments.

Trash and Recycling Collection Update

City trash, yard waste, recycling and bulk item collection will operate on a one-day delay schedule for the remainder of the week. There may be additional delays. Please keep collection carts on the curb until crews are able to service your home.
