The Fantastic Mr. Fox

  • Nov 15, 2024

Check out this beautiful red fox spotted in Eden Park! This is one of three types of wild canines that live in Ohio. While the gray fox prefers unglaciated areas in rural forests, the red fox and coyote can be found in some of the most densely urban neighborhoods. (One used to be seen in the tree island inside the Zoo's giraffe enclosure!) They are excellent hunters of rodents and have been known to jump up and pounce on their prey for that element of surprise. Breeding season is usually during winter when the kits can be born the following spring when food resources are more plentiful.

If you have a proclivity for pups, join us on January 4th at 7:30am at Avon Woods Nature Preserve for a Sunrise Walk on the Wild Side (details coming soon). We'll take a short hike with our own furry friends and discuss some of their wild Ohio canine relatives.
