Oak Tree Removal at Owl's Nest Park

It's never an easy decision to say goodbye to an old, respected tree friend, but sometimes it's the only option. A red oak currently stands near the entrance of Owl's Nest on the Madison Rd. side of the park. This tree has stood tall for many years, but is now decaying, dying and must be removed. In the forest, we normally allow these trees to fall and die naturally, but that's not possible in this case. The tree stands in between two heavily trafficked sidewalks, a busy road, and is touching power lines. Due to its location and the likelihood of dropping large branches, it must be removed to keep all park visitors, passersby, and vehicles safe.

Although it's a sad goodbye, we are glad to say two new oak trees, a sawtooth oak and a shingle oak, will be planted nearby along the oak tree pathway. In the future, we hope to add even more trees throughout the entire park.  This dying Red Oak is the last remaining tree on the strip between the two sidewalks. Staff are considering planting smaller trees along this strip where bollards currently occupy.

Further, we are currently working with the surrounding community and our partners at the Cincinnati Parks Foundation to identify other improvements to the park and historic pavilion. We are looking for community feedback on improvements to Owl's Nest Park and would love to hear from you by filling out this brief survey. Be sure to take it before its close date on May 31.

We are grateful to our small but mighty staff for assessing and maintaining the health of the trees in all of our parks. It isn't often we have to take down trees, but in cases of public safety we must act quickly. And as will be done in this case, we take pride in replacing dying trees with new ones, who will be here for future generations to enjoy.
