February is National Bird Feeding Month

“Hope is the thing with feathers”, poet Emily Dickinson wrote. Perhaps she understood the peace and joy that watching the birds can bring, even on the chillest of winter days.

There is nothing quite so cheery as to see a bright red cardinal on the backdrop of a dreary landscape. We can often encourage this scene by making our backyard a haven for our feathered friends. Native birds have had their share of challenges as of late – from noise and light pollution, to loss of habitat and food sources. Setting up a simple feeder in your yard can bring a whole host of ornithological wonders to your window. Many birds, unlike other animals, are known to traverse far and wide for feeder stops, whether in pastoral countrysides or densely packed urban areas. Next time you’re out getting your groceries, pick up some seed to set out for the birds and see who drops by.

If you’re interested in some backyard beginner birding basics, come out to our program on Feb. 29. You’ll get to know the nuthatches from the tufted titmice and what fare they enjoy.
