Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers
Planters look best when you combine plants with three different habits:

Salvia
- Thrillers are usually vertical, such as phormium, canna, calla pennisetum or upright fuchsia. For cool season displays use kale, swiss chard, or Juncus.
 - Fillers tend to be horizontal or weaving, such as heliotrope, osteospermum, petunia, coleus or impatiens. For cool season displays use pansies or violas.
 - Spillers are cascading, such as helichrysum, ipomea or callibrachoa.
