Create Your Own Pollinator Garden

  • Jun 22, 2021

It’s pollinator week! Even though we only recognize them for a week, creating a space for them year-round is very important. Pollinators are essential for our food system and ecosystems, and quite frankly, we need them to survive.

Looking to provide a pollinator garden for the bees, butterflies, wasps, moths, beetles, hummingbirds and more? Here are some helpful tips.

  1. Choose natives! Native plants are the best thing for pollinators and these plants will flourish without needing fertilizers or pesticides. Native plants in Cincinnati include milkweed, hyssop, marigold, viburnum and linden, just to name a few.
  2. Determine location! Choose a spot in your garden that receives lots of sunlight. Make sure your soil is healthy and free of chemical fertilizers. Be happy with where you place it among the rest of your landscaping.
  3. Prep the site and plant! When prepping, be sure there are no invasive plants in your way. Then, plant your natives.
  4. Continue to care for your pollinator garden! As you would the rest of your garden, water the plants, remove unwanted weeds, cut plants back in spring and steer clear of pesticides.
  5. Enjoy! When your garden is in full bloom, sit back and watch the magic of these pollinators. It will brighten your day.
