California Woods Erosion Repairs - Park to Remain Open, Expect Periodic Road Closures

  • Mar 31, 2023

Flooding at California Woods

Starting Monday, April 3, the California Woods access road off of Kellogg will be periodically closed for repairs necessary to ensure access to the park is available for future generations to enjoy. The park will remain open during this time. These repairs come after years of flooding at California Woods, which has, overtime, eroded the road that allows park visitors to access the park. Regrettably, erosion has progressively become a common problem along our riverbanks and hillsides. This bank has sluffed off several feet even in the latest rainstorms.

In order to address this issue, 200 large retaining blocks (like Legos) will be stacked on a concrete footer to create a wall that can absorb the impact of the creek during flood season and protect the roadway and stream embankment. It will be backed with drainable stone and covered with suitable soil to the top of the wall.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but these repairs are absolutely necessary to maintain safe park access. The construction will last approximately three weeks. Although the park will remain open, there will be two-hour closing periods for stone deliveries. Signage will be placed when these short closures occur.

When visiting the park, please be careful as you pass the construction areas, as there will be heavy equipment present.

This is just one of many projects showcasing our efforts to tackle the deferred maintenance in our parks. We are grateful to Cincinnati Parks' Planning and Design team for prioritizing the repairs of this park to ensure park patrons can continue safely utilizing and enjoying it.
