Deck Safety Check Program
Why Deck Safety?
Each year, people are injured or killed due to structural failures of decks on residential properties. According to the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) the number of injuries and deaths related to deck collapses or failures has been on the rise over the last decade due to the increasing age of decks and the failure of owners to perform regular maintenance. The typical life expectancy of a wood deck is 15-20 years, assuming the owner performed regular maintenance, and according to statistics there are over 40 million decks in the US over 20 years old.
In an effort to reduce the number tragedies caused by deck collapses or failures, the City of Cincinnati’s Department of Buildings and Inspections (B&I) is now offering a free Deck Safety Check program to property owners.
After winter and harsh weather conditions, it is important for homeowners and property owners to inspect their decks and consider a professional deck safety check annually. The evaluation of residential decks requires special knowledge, expertise and experience because of the possibility of structural deterioration. Other safety hazards could be with elements such as guardrails, handrails, lighting, stairs and landings, which may not meet current safety standards.
