Central Parkway Protected Bike Lanes Under Construction
As part of the City of Cincinnati’s ongoing investment in the neighborhoods of Over the Rhine, West End, and CUF, the Department of Transportation and Engineering is constructing protected bike lanes on Central Parkway from Elm Street to Marshall Avenue. The City’s contractor, Ford Development Corp., is conducting the following work:
- installing bus stop islands from Charles Street to Liberty Street
- installing a raised protected bike lane in front of the Brighton-Mohawk Building in order to keep 15 parking spaces
- widening the pavement at CSR Academy, 1812 Central Parkway to allow for bus parking for drop off and pick up of students
- widening the pavement at 2318 Central Parkway to allow for parking by residents, who do not have off-street parking
- installing signage and line striping to create the new traffic pattern
The new traffic pattern converts the existing curb lanes into protected bike lanes, and introduces peak-hour parking restrictions along certain portions of Central Parkway north of Liberty Street.
Generally, there will be a 5-foot minimum bike lane in each direction adjacent to the curb along Central Parkway, which will be separated from the rest of traffic by 3-foot minimum buffer zones.
New Parking Lane Shifts Away From Curb, Next To Bicycle Lane
Commuters and residents can expect to see a new on-street parking lane on Central Parkway as early as Wednesday, July 23, 2014.
Between 12th Street and Marshall Avenue, the parking lane will be shifting away from the curb, and cars will now be parking adjacent to the new bicycle lanes.
When looking for an on-street parking spot on Central Parkway, motorists should look for the angled lines next to the bicycle lane, and park next to the angled lines.
Temporary signs will be posted this week to assist motorists in parking in the new parking lane.
- New peak-hour parking restrictions will be in place north of Liberty Street.
- On-street parking will be restricted from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the northbound lane between Liberty Street and Brighton Place.
- On-street parking will be restricted from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the southbound lane between Liberty Street and Brighton Place.
- Full-time parking will continue to be available on Central Parkway south of Liberty Street.
Motorists may also see some temporary parking restrictions at various points along the route as contractors work to finish striping the new street design over the next 7-10 days.
Drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed and use caution when approaching the area.
