Bike Lanes

Bike lane

A bike lane is a portion of the roadway which has been designated by striping, signing and pavement markings for the exclusive use of bicyclists.

Bike lanes are marked by:

  • a white bicycle symbol with a directional arrow
  • a solid white line to the left of the lane

Some bike lanes are protected, which means that there is a barrier between the cyclist and the roadway. Barriers include both reflective posts and an increased distance between the bike lane and the roadway.

When a protected bike lane encounters a traffic intersection, the portion of the bike lane that crosses the intersection may be painted green to alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists.
