Cincinnati Working To Reduce Street Flooding Along Guerley Road

Construction Of Large Detention Dam Slated To Begin This Month

Street flooding along Guerley Road in West Price Hill will be reduced following the construction of a large detention dam. Construction is scheduled to start this month.

Guerley Road at Sunset Avenue is a well-known location for street flooding during heavy rains.

Cincinnati’s Stormwater Management Utility (SMU) will build a Class III earthen dam across a natural ravine that will capture stormwater runoff from as far west as Ferguson Road.

The dam, which will be 20 feet high and 40 feet wide at its widest point, will be located between Dunham Recreation Center and an apartment complex to the south. The dam will function much like a retention pond and retain water to prevent localized flooding.

The dam will hold stormwater for about 72 hours after a rain in an approximately 1.4-acre area, slowly releasing the water through an underground outlet pipe to the combined sewer system. This will help prevent both street flooding and combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the Mill Creek.

Ultimately, the dam will release to new stormwater sewers along Guerley Road and Sunset Avenue (constructed as part of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati’s Lick Run project) that will convey the water directly to the Mill Creek by 2018.

The detention dam will be built to hold an approximately 75-year storm, which is about 5.5 inches of rain over a 24-hour period. Excess stormwater will overflow into a spillway that drains to the combined sewer. The area will be fenced on the north and south sides for public safety.

The dam will look like a grassy sloped hill. Trees will be planted in front of the dam for landscaping, and trees and shrubs will be planted behind the dam to help infiltrate stormwater.

The project is anticipated to be complete by summer 2014. Construction cannot occur during the late fall and winter months.

Traffic issues are not anticipated as part of this project.
