In 1995, City Council approved the Neighborhood Street Calming Plan. It forms the framework for public participation in the street calming process. This 16-step process uses checks and balances to insure a cooperative, residential concurrence of street calming in an effort to achieve a safe and secure neighborhood and improved quality of life. Street calming is a term used for the practice of reducing vehicle speeds and traffic volume by placing various physical and visual obstructions in the roadway. All street calming projects are subject to a consensus building process that includes input from the Safety Department, the community council, a post card survey of the directly affected residents and businesses, and a review/approval by City Council.
