Field Training Officers Recognized For Excellence

Fifteen of Cincinnati Police Department’s Field Training Officers (FTOs) were honored at a departmental meeting Tuesday May 29 for their exceptional efforts with the graduates of the 100th Recruit Class.  Newest recipients of the Excellence in Training award are Sergeant Matthew Vogeler, Officer Melissa Cummins and Officer Herman Hill of District One; Sergeant Mark Hunley, Officer Andre Miller and Officer Myron Larkin of District Two; Sergeant Joe Richardson, Officer Scott Brians and Specialist Scott McManis of District Three; Sergeant Sam Igel, Officer Donald Meece and Officer Thomas Wells of District Four; and Sergeant Jeff Brunswick, Officer Steve Rogers and Officer William Keuper of District Five.

After completing 25 weeks of formal classroom instruction, probationary police officers begin the second phase of their training when they are assigned to work with Field Training Officers for a minimum of 12 weeks.  There are 139 FTOs in the Cincinnati Police Department, chosen for their exemplary performance to take on the additional duties and responsibilities of providing “on the job training” to prepare new police officers for solo assignments.  The FTO provides guidance and supervision to help new police officers develop proficiency in the judgment and job skills needed in their work.
