City Manager Mourns the Death of Officer Sonny Kim

CINCINNATI – It is with a heavy heart that I pass along the news that we have lost veteran Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim who was shot and killed in the line of duty this morning.

The exchange of gunfire happened at about 9 a.m. near Whetsel Avenue and Roe Street in Madisonville. Police officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a person with a gun who was acting erratically on Whetsel Avenue.

This is a stark reminder of the risk that so many of you take day in and day out in order to keep the rest of us safe. It is also a reminder of the important calling that we, as public servants share.

Please join me in offering our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Officer Kim. He will be missed.

Our entire Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) family has a difficult road ahead and I have told Chief Blackwell we are here to provide support during this time.

Below is the City Manager's speech at District 1 headquarters:

Good afternoon.

On behalf of the entire City Administration our thoughts, our prayers and condolences go out to Police Officer Sonny Kim’s family and the entire CPD family.

Mayor Cranley is unable to be here today due to travel related to the U.S. Conference of Mayors. However, he sends his condolences and prayers to the Kim family and Police Department.

P.O. Kim dedicated himself to serving and protecting the city of Cincinnati for 27 years. He has had a decorated career.

This is a stark reminder that all jobs are not created equal.

Our first responders – particularly our police officers and fire fighters – self-select themselves for these careers, which demonstrates selflessness and their willingness to serve and to put themselves in harm’s way.

Officer Kim and all other members of the department are extraordinary individuals with extraordinary courage. They have the courage and the conviction to do what many of us would not be prepared to do and that is to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Officer Kim is a hero and whatever the Administration needs to do to reflect that and to demonstrate that with respect to his home going, we will do.

Again, on behalf of the Administration I extend condolences to Officer Kim’s family and the entire CPD family.
