New Tdap Immunization Recommendation
Vulnerable populations in our community are at risk of contracting pertussis. This can have serious deleterious effects for newborns, even death.
Therefore, we support the use of Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy, optimally given between 27-36 weeks of gestation to maximize the maternal response and transfer to the infant.
However, it may be given at any time during pregnancy, and without regard of the patient's prior history of receiving Tdap. Additionally, family members and caregivers of infants should receive Tdap to further sustain the "cocooning effect" for the newborn.
Please refer to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee Opinion for more detailed information and guidance.
