District Chief Raffel Prophett of the Cincinnati Fire Department reported on a One-Alarm out-door and
structure fire that occurred in the community of Avondale in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 19, 2013 at
approximately 12:15pm. The Cincinnati Emergency Communications Center received several calls
stating there was smoke in the area of Whittier Street and Van Buren Avenue.
First responding units reported heavy black smoke showing in the aforementioned location. Upon their
arrival fire crews discovered several rubber auto-tires, piled against a workshop type building, on fire.
Fire crews quickly extinguished the outdoor fire; however, the fire had spread inside the workshop, but
fortunately crews were also able to extinguish it quickly. Fire crews remained on the scene for an
additional 30 minutes to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Thirty firefighters responded to
the one alarm fire.
There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters and the damaged is estimated at $1000. The
cause of the fire is the result of sparks from a power cutting tool, assisted by proximal gasoline, which
ignited the pile of auto-tires.
