District Fire Chief Marc E. Monahan reported on a One-Alarm structure fire that occurred in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati on Thursday, January 23, 2014. At 8:49 PM, the Cincinnati Emergency Communications Center received a call for a house on fire next to 2216 May St.
Upon arrival, fire companies reported a working fire on the 1st floor of a one story with attic, frame, single family dwelling. First-in fire companies initiated an aggressive interior attack and quickly located one victim who was collapsed inside the building. They immediately rescued her from the building and transferred her to a Cincinnati Fire Department paramedic ambulance that was arriving on the scene. The victim was transported to UC Hospital where she remains in critical condition.
Fire companies remained inside the structure for approximately 15 minutes when fire conditions in the attic area turned untenable. A defensive operation was initiated at that point and the bulk of the fire was extinguished in approximately 45 minutes. Fire fighters remain on the scene overhauling and checking for fire extension.
Damage is estimated at $100,000 and the building is a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Cincinnati Fire Department Investigative Unit.
Forty firefighters were utilized at this incident. There was one civilian injury and no firefighter injuries.
