Evanston Welcomes St. Ambrose
Vice Mayor, Community Partners Cut Ribbon On 26 New Rental Homes
This afternoon in Evanston, an excited crowd applauded as the ribbon was cut on St. Ambrose.
This new $6 million development consists of 26 units, including 1-and 2-bedroom apartments and 3-bedroom townhomes. Located at the site of the former St. Leger Apartments in what is known as the Five Points intersection in Evanston, this development is part of Evanston’s continuing revitalization plan.
Almost one year ago, on July 17, 2013, the crime-ridden St. Leger apartments were demolished. Significantly, District 2 Police reported a 35% reduction in overall crime compared to this same time last year.
"The partnerships we have formed in this past year have significantly contributed to this reduction in crime. This is truly a model for community police relations," said Captain Jeff Butler, District 2 Commander.
"The community of Evanston is on the move for the well being of our housing, business, education and spirituality. St. Ambrose is a positive part of this revitalization," said Anzora Adkins, Evanston Community Council President.
This development is LEED Silver Certified, and provides good air quality and low utility bills by including Energy Star appliances, low-usage plumbing and electrical fixtures and high efficiency heating and air conditioning.
There were many project partners involved in this effort. The Port Authority used Moving Ohio Forward funds to demolish the St. Ledger, while the Model Group developed the site with funding partners including Ohio Housing Finance Agency, Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing, Local Initiative Support Corporation and Key Bank.
The City provided the LEED tax abatement.
"This project reflects the power of collaboration and public private partnerships from start to finish," said Jeff McElravy, Interim Director of the City's Department of Trade and Development.
