Park Description

Adjoining the University of Cincinnati, Burnet Woods is located at Clifton Avenue between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Ludlow. The idea of a park at this location began when Robert W. Burnet and William S. Groesbeck suggested in 1871 that the city lease the property in Clifton known as Burnet Woods, and in 1872 this was done. Purchase of the land in 1881 and subsequent acquisitions, less transfers to the University of Cincinnati, fix the present park area at 89.3 acres.

Trailside Nature Center (currently closed for renovation) and the adjacent stone slide were designed by Carl Freund and built by the Federal Works Project Administration with work completed in 1940. The interior of the Trailside was recently renovated to include a children's museum and handicap access meeting room for nature education programs.

One of the best secrets of the Cincinnati Parks is the Wolff Planetarium (currently closed for renovation) located at the Trailside Nature Center in Burnet Woods.
On the northside of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive are 84 tons of carved pink granite, a design project of University of Cincinnati students completed in 1972. The stone is from the former Chamber of Commerce Building which was destroyed by fire in 1911. The Burnet Woods design is a memorial to H.H. Richardson, architect of the Chamber of Commerce Building.

The Lone Star Pavilion, on a hill overlooking Clifton Avenue, is a gift from the Son of the Republic of Texas. The Pavilion, which was dedicated in 1974, commemorates the gift of the famous Twin Sisters, two six-pound cannons given to General Sam Houston by friends in Cincinnati to assure Texas independence at the Battle of San Jacinto.

The artificial lake, southeast of Trailside, was constructed in 1875. Adjacent to Trailside is a picnic area with open shelter, tables, grills and children's play equipment. A shelter in the upper part of the park includes restroom facilities with nearby picnic tables and children's play equipment.
