Employees who accept a position through promotion, lateral transfer, or demotion shall not be permitted to transfer, promote, or voluntarily demote to another City position for at least 12 months.


The City of Cincinnati is seeking to fill the position of Accounting Technician 1.  Under direct supervision, this employee processes and maintains financial documents such as requisitions and vouchers, verifies the accuracy of information, posts information and prepares simple financial reports.  Performs related duties as required.

Civil Service Rules provide that ties on final exam scores are broken based on seniority.  If more than one competitor was appointed on the same day, the ties will be broken by the time stamp on the application.

TRANSCRIPTS showing your qualifications for this position should be delivered to: Two Centennial Plaza, 805 Central Avenue, Suite 200, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 by the application deadline date. The City does not maintain a transcript file; a copy must be submitted with each application. You may submit a readable, xeroxed copy of your transcripts in lieu of requesting a new copy from the school for each application Please note: copies of unofficial versions or Internet printouts of transcripts are NOT acceptable.

WHO MAY COMPETE ON THE EXAM:  All classified, permanent employees with the City of Cincinnati who meet the qualifications listed below as of December 9, 2008.  All required experience must be with the City of Cincinnati and must have occurred within the last (5) five years.  IT IS THE POLICY OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION THAT TEMPORARY TRANSFER AND/OR PROMOTION TIME WILL NOT BE COUNTED FOR EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY PURPOSES (CIVIL SERVICE RULE 10, SECTION 2 – 8/3/89).

REQUIRED SERVICE RATING:  No employee whose last service (performance) rating was “does not meet expectations” may compete.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Each applicant must have one year of full-time work experience as a classified permanent employee with the City of Cincinnati and must have successfully completed three accounting classes (at least 3 quarter credits per class) at a technical institute or college in basic or elementary accounting. You are required to show your valid Ohio Driver's License to the Human Resources Department staff NO LATER THAN THE DEADLINE DATE FOR FILING APPLICATIONS. 

EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES WHICH MAY BE SAMPLED/MEASURED/INCLUDED IN THIS EXAM:

Knowledge of:
Basic mathematics, e.g., subtraction, addition, multiplication, division, percents, decimals, ratios, proportions, interest, etc.
Terms such as debit, credit, encumbrance, invoice, purchase order, etc.
Safety policies and procedures, e.g. Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements.
Alphabetical and numerical order.
Bookkeeping principles and practices.

Skill to:
Operate an adding machine, calculator, copy and/or duplicating machine.
File.
Type.

Ability to:
Make complex and varied mathematical computations and tabulations rapidly and accurately.
Write legibly.
Identify errors and make corrections in accounting records.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Read and comprehend instructions.
Organize and complete work on schedule.

STUDY GUIDE:  The majority of exam questions will be taken from the following sections of the Accounting Study Guide:  Basic Accounting Section, Administrative Section and the Supervisory Section.  The Accounting Study Guide will be provided to applicants at the time of application.  You are permitted to bring a hand-held battery operated calculator to the exam.

SUBJECTS AND WEIGHTS OF TEST SECTIONS: The written exam will count for 100% of the exam grade.  The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Secretary.  Determination of the passing score will be based on the job analysis, analysis of examination results, consultation with subject matter experts or other professional methods.  Seniority credit will be added to passing scores.
