Squad 52 serves a multi-purpose role within the Cincinnati Fire Department. It is both a heavy rescue and a hazardous materials response unit. In addition to Hazmat certification members of the company receive training in auto and elevator extrication, building and trench collapse, and water and rope rescue; Squad 52 responds to a wide variety of runs.

Mac-1 is the primary hazardous material truck, which also doubles as an air cylinder exchange truck at major fires. There is also a 16-foot Trench trailer that hold air shores and lumber for a trench rescue or building collapse.

All members of Squad 52 are certified MSA SCBA repair technicians; Squad 52 does all repairs and maintenance. Members of the company also repair and maintain all scientific meters used by the Cincinnati Fire Department. It also does SCBA facepiece fit testing for all members of the Fire Department.
