    About The Board Of Building Appeals

    The Board of Building Appeals conducts public hearings and decides appeals to written decisions, rulings, and orders issued by the Director of the Department of Buildings and Inspections. 

    The Board is available to those seeking relief from the interpretations of the Building Plans Examination Section. The Building Plans Examiners are available to help customers with their needs in order to better understand the Board of Building Appeals Process.

    How Do I File An Appeal?

    Without exception, the complete appeal package must be filed within 30 calendar days from the date of the written ruling or order. Submit an application, necessary documentation, and the applicable fee in-person or by mail. All applications must be complete and submitted with the following items:

    1. An adjudication letter (a copy of the written ruling or written order being appealed) signed by the Plans Examiner or Inspector and the City’s Chief Building Official.
    2. A nonrefundable filing fee. Checks are payable to “The City of Cincinnati”
    3. A supporting statement (Equivalency Letter) outlining the proposed alternative arrangement or argument to be offered for the Board’s consideration. An appeal based in whole or in part on hardship requires that an estimate or bid in detail, estimating the cost of compliance, a statement of income and alternative safety proposals to ensure an equivalent degree of safety, must be submitted.
    4. Submit nine copies of the packet of A, B and C above. Any drawings or maps included cannot be larger than 11”X 17”.

    All appeal application transactions must be completed by 4:00 p.m. No exceptions.

    Hearing Information 

    The regular monthly meetings of the Board of Building Appeals of the City of Cincinnati are held the first Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m., in the Fifth Floor Conference Room at the Business Development and Permit Center, 805 Central Ave., Suite 500.
